Ponder Anew: Baroque Masterworks from the Museum & Gallery

The art of the Baroque period provides a glimpse into the life and culture of a distant past. Although the clothing, setting, and props may reflect an outdated time, the artistry used and the narratives explored by these Old Masters are universal. Enjoy a glimpse of 14 paintings from M&G’s collection on exhibit in downtown Greenville.  May you ponder anew these timeless treasures and find inspiration relevant to life in the present.

Look & Find: An M&G Scavenger Hunt

For Kids K5-8th grade

The artists in the Ponder Anew exhibition were not just great painters, they were also wonderful storytellers! Each picture is filled with fascinating details about historical figures from the Bible. Using your best observation skills, discover the real people in these timeless treasures. Get your scavenger hunt at the main reception desk at First Pres.

 

Public Tours

If you’re interested in a tour of the Ponder Anew exhibition, visit here. Tour groups must be 10 people or more, and the tour length runs 45-60 minutes.

Specialized Focus Tours (for adults)

Cultural Discovery Tours (for K-12 students)

The following tours are available for groups of at least 10 or more by reservation only according to scheduling availability. Tours are 45 minutes in length. Schedule at least two weeks in advance. Request tours HERE. 

Fees:

Students (K5-12): educational discounts are available

Adults (College age and above): $5 per person

Note: There is a non-refundable reservation fee to book your tour.

 

Luther’s Journey: Experience the History 

Gustafson Fine Arts Center, campus of Bob Jones University

For adults and students (6th-12th grade)

This focus exhibition features paintings from M&G’s internationally respected Old Master collection.  Tour the exhibit and take a closer look at the man, Martin Luther, by understanding more about his life’s circumstances in the 1500s—a plague circling Europe, the scarcity and inaccessibility of books, the normalcy of illiteracy, and the exacting authority of church and state. Luther’s life journey reminds us that ordinary people can be used by God to inspire extraordinary and enduring change.

 

Benjamin West: The Father of American Painting

War Memorial Chapel, campus of Bob Jones University

For adults and students (3rd-12th grade)

From an aspiring artist in rural Pennsylvania plucking the hairs of his cat’s tail for a home-made paintbrush to working as History Painter to the King of England during the Revolutionary War, Benjamin West led a remarkable life of influence, and his paintings detail his story of amazing opportunities! Tour this monumental collection of paintings commissioned by King George III and discover their significance in history.

  • On Good Friday, April 7 from 3-4 PM, join M&G Executive Director, Erin Jones for a private guided tour of Benjamin West’s monumental royal painting commission, The Progress of Revealed Religion, in the War Memorial Chapel on the campus. This tour is free and open to the public.
