M&G Annual Makers Market

During BJU’s Homecoming events every October, M&G hosts a curated market of handmade art, crafts, foods, and designs created by BJU grads, current and former faculty/staff, and current and former students. The Makers come from around the country and feature a variety of items including handmade cards, specialty cupcakes, functional pottery, illustrations, watercolor paintings, jewelry, fiber art, high-end writing instruments, gourmet popcorn, fidget gadgets, herbed soaps, soy candles, and more!

This all-day event is hosted on both floors of the Welcome Center, outside in the Student Center, and in The Den on the Saturday of Homecoming. Plus, it is open to the public to enjoy!

If you’re interested in becoming a Maker, please consider the following process and timeline:

Application: Artists (and craftsmen, artisans, illustrators, designers, jewelers, bakers, etc.) can submit their application and images online beginning 8AM on Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day) through Midnight on Sunday, June 9, 2024.

  • Remember, since this is for BJU Homecoming, applicants are limited to current/former faculty and staff, BJU graduates, and current/former BJU students.
  • There is a non-refundable application fee of $25.
  • Market application information will be updated each Spring, and applications are only received during the 2-week time period stated. Only Makers who have applied are considered for inclusion in the annual Makers Market.
  • M&G will make an email announcement about the opening of the application process in advance and on the day of the opening. There will be reminders throughout the two weeks to encourage Makers to apply. If you would like to receive this announcement please click here.

Selection: Following the closure of the application process, a jury of BJU grads will review all submissions and choose which artists will participate in the Market in the following categories: 2D Fine Art, 3D Fine Art, To Wear, Paper Goods, Fiber Art, and Everything Else.

  • Once the jury makes its choices based on quality, price point, and variety, M&G will contact the chosen Makers to accept their admission and pay their booth fee to participate.
  • Space for the Market is limited; therefore the number of Makers are limited between 35-42 total.

Announcement: M&G will announce the participating Makers on Facebook, Instagram, our website, and via email at some point late summer. Saturday, October 5, 2024 will be M&G’s 8th annual Makers Market.

Before You Apply…

Please read the following information carefully.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants:

To be considered for participation in M&G’s annual Makers Market, you must apply. Since M&G’s Makers Market is an event linked with BJU’s Homecoming, M&G has chosen to limit applicants to those artists that are BJU graduates, current and former BJU students, current BJU faculty/staff, and retired or former BJU faculty/staff.  If you fit one or more of these categories, please apply!

Entries:

You may only enter items that you have made or designed.  By submitting your application and photos, you guarantee that the work presented is your original creation. We reserve the right to dismiss any exhibitor if they have misrepresented themselves or their merchandise, for any reason we deem appropriate. If you’re not sure that your work is eligible, please reference the FAQs.

We limit exhibitors by category to ensure a variety of goods at M&G’s Makers Market. In some cases your work could be accepted by the jury, but your category filled. In this case, your name will be added to the waiting list, and you will be notified in the event that space opens within your category.

There are 35 exhibitor positions available.

Application Period:

Market application registration opens at 8AM on Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day), and the submission period ends on Sunday, June 11 at midnight (EST).

JURYING

Work will be judged on its originality, quality, distinctiveness, and innovation. The jury, which consists of BJU graduates, may accept or decline some or all the work represented by the photos accompanying an application.  All submissions are presented anonymously to the jury to avoid unfair bias.

MARKET INFO

M&G’s Makers Market will be held indoors on both the main and second floors of the Welcome Center as well as outside in the student center on the BJU campus in Greenville, SC on Saturday, October 7, 2023 from 10AM-5PM.  Admission is free, and anyone is invited to attend!

FEES

Payment of the application fee will be made by credit or debit card through M&G’s website.

Application Fee: A non-refundable $25 application fee is due with your submission.

Exhibition Fee: The exhibition fee is not collected until applicants are chosen. Once participants have been selected by the jury of graduates, M&G will email instructions for paying this fee.

Other: If you don’t operate a full-time retail business, you must obtain a special retail license for $20 from the South Carolina Department of Revenue for selling at craft shows. Locate the information about artists and crafters here under, “How to Get a Retail License.”

BOOTHS

M&G provides only one booth size (8 ft. table) for an exhibition fee of $65 and student exhibition fee of $45.  To qualify for the student rate, you must have a current undergraduate or graduate classification at Bob Jones University. Exhibition fees are only paid after the artist application has been accepted and chosen by the jury. Sharing booths is not permitted. Each exhibitor must apply and have his/her work juried individually.

M&G’s Makers Market is a family-friendly event. Participants will be asked to remove any goods not in keeping with this atmosphere.
